Electret Microphones (CMA-4544PF-W)

 

 

 

 

An electret mic is the best choice for money and low power requirements. It is extremely compact in size and has a good performance value.

For some time I have been searching for a microphone for my project that works above 20 KHz. It started from electret microphones and ended just right back at the same electret condenser microphones. Even though the datasheets says it has a frequency range of 20 to 20 kHz, it is possible to obtain the signal having around 24kHz. Obviously will have some high attenuation. But will work quite at 24khz range.

Many types of microphones need power to operate. They are generally called condenser microphones. If you google around the webpages for mic circuits, you will definitely find out that all the condenser type microphones need a biasing arrangement. Electret condenser type microphone has a built in FET buffer. So it needs to be powered. Normal biasing voltage ranges from 3 to 9v.

Also you need to add a capacitor to block the dc voltage from getting into. When you bias the mic make sure it is free from noise or any other fluctuation. It will surely affect its sensitivity.

If you want to work with higher frequency signals there is also a 40 kHz transceiver pair(190Rs). Electret condenser microphone costs only around 10Rs. If you are planning to buy one here is the link.

Getting started with GPIO (Testing GPIO with a multimeter)

There are 65 possible GPIO pins that you can control. Some of the GPIO pins are normally configured to different functions. Let's play with one of them. Go to the beaglebone website and figure out the header pin corresponding to gpio23. The gpio23 is mapped to the 13th header pin. In this tutorial we are testing the gpio23 output using a multimeter (Do not connect an LED directly to BBB IO pin). Serial Port Communication in Linux using Minicom

First of all install minicom using apt-get install minicom or directly download the .deb package from  https://packages.debian.org/sid/minicom  and install it using dpkg -i <package name> After install type minicom -s to setup the minicom for using your serial port. Select Serial Port Setup and type A to select serial device. It will be shown as /dev/modem replace modem with  your serial device. Press Enter twice to save. You can also setup boadrate and all those stuff in the Serial Port Setup. After that you can save your configurations. Select Save Setup as. Then type a name and press enter to save it. If you wan't to open your configuration later, type minicom <configuration name>
